The Box

I carved a walnut box out of solid wood. No miters, no dovetails, no shortcuts—just a router, some stubborn ideas, and a lot of patience.

This walnut box build breaks all the usual woodworking rules. Instead of traditional joinery, I hollowed the box and lid out of 8/4 walnut, added SOSS invisible hinges, experimented with a through bowtie (with questionable grain orientation), and even cobbled together a lid stop from an off cut of maple.

Along the way, I learned lessons about quill travel, resin fills, jig failures, and the fine line between “efficient use of scraps” and “cutting corners.”
